Pond maintenance crucial to water quality of East Texas watering holes

Aquatic vegetation can strangle the quality and cleanliness of East Texas watering tanks. There are basically three options to fixing this issue: physically, chemically, and biologically.

The Physical Option has obvious limitations. Not only will many of the roots and runners remain in the soil to sprout again, but many of the plants cannot even be reached. However, as a preventative measure, the use of a tractor bucket to deepen the edges of the tank can be very beneficial. As the sun warms this shallower water near the edges, vegetation is encouraged to grow like wildfire.

Ideally, the edges of the pond should deepen to 2.5 feet to three feet as quickly as possible, with a slope of 2:1 to 3:1. (Or, the bottom of the pond should drop one foot in depth for every two to three feet towards the center.)
