Federal funding helps city to construct sidewalks near high school
New sidewalks will be constructed along sections of Elm Street and Lion Drive in New Boston next year according to plans approved in October by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
“Federal money is providing much of the funding for the new sidewalks and TxDOT will be overseeing the construction work,” said Tommy Bruce, area engineer for Tx-DOT in Texarkana. The new sidewalks will be constructed along Elm Street from Tapp Park to Front Street and along Lion Drive from College Street to Elm Street. “The sidewalks will make the area around New Boston High School, Tapp Park and downtown more pedestrian-friendly,” Bruce added.
The sidewalks will also include wheelchair ramps to make them meet all Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
Blackstone Concrete Ventures, LLC of Lubbock was awarded the contract for the construction project with a bid of $760,142. Funding for most of the project comes from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program.
“Work on the project should begin in January and take about seven months to complete,” Bruce said.
