One year removed from a district championship, the Redwater Dragons are looking to the future with the hire of head Coach Cody Engstrom.
Before becoming a Dragon, Coach Engstrom spent the past seven years coaching in the Texarkana community with six years spent at Liberty Eylau and the last year at Arkansas High.
Coach Engstrom has been a part of some very successful programs and knows what it takes to rebuild. His most recent success, having a part in breaking a nearly 30 year conference championship drought with Arkansas High.
Redwater Athletic Director, Brandon Layne is enthusiastic about the new hire and his potential.
“We are very excited to have Coach Engstrom join our staff coming from Arkansas High.”, said Layne. “His experience and connection to the area will be a great asset as he takes over our baseball program.”
“An LE grad and former assistant, he has been involved in successful programs.”, said Layne.
Coach Engstrom brings to the table lots of pose as he embarks on his first ever head coach title.
“I’m coming in as a young coach that is hungry, ready to win and excited to get rolling”, said Engstrom. “I am bringing a lot of energy at practice and at games.”
“Our kids are going to learn how to compete every day and game type scenarios will be practiced on a daily basis”, Engstrom explained. “They will know how to compete and be a winner.”
“Winning is important and the main goal but first off, we are going to be great human beings”, said Engstrom. “That starts in the classroom.”
“I know that’s kind of cliche, but that’s what it comes down to”, Engstrom explained.
“You’re a student athlete and student comes first.” “I’ll be checking up on that regularly”, said Engstrom. “We are going to have great character in the classroom and how we handle ourselves.”
“Everybody in the community knows that you’re a Redwater Dragon baseball player and we are going to develop young men on and off the field as well as baseball players”, said Engstrom.
Coach Engstrom is excited about the goals set forth for Redwater High School Baseball.
“These guys have had a lot of good baseball players come through here”, said Engstrom. “I think Coach Martindale did a great job with them.”
“They are only a year removed from winning a district championship and that is the first goal”, Engstrom explained. “When we sit down in our parent meeting in January, we will talk about goals.”
“Goal number one is to win the district championship”, said Engstrom. Redwater has had a tough time in the playoffs the last few years but we will worry about that when we get there.”
“Goal number one, win a district championship and then take it game by game and try to get to the diamond in Round Rock.”
