Bowie County budget not without flaws according to Pct. 2 Commissioner Tom Whitten

A Bowie County commissioner says the new budget does not adequately serve the residents of his precinct and refused to vote in favor of it.

A Bowie County commissioner says the new budget does not adequately serve the residents of his precinct and refused to vote in favor of it.

“This budget is a continuation of the abandonment of Precinct 2’s citizens who happen to carry the highest tax burden,” Tom Whitten, Bowie County Precinct 2 commissioner, said in a written statement he read to the court during the August 21 special session. “If you live in Precinct 2, you should be outraged. As your representative and neighbor, I am standing in the gap, speaking out against this on your behalf. Therefore, I will not be voting for this one-sided budget in its current configuration.”

The $44 million budget passed with a vote of 4-1. Whitten was the only opposing vote. The new budget takes affect on October 1, 2023.
