GEORGE RAY GORTNEY

George Ray Gortney passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023, in Sugar Land, Texas.

Born in Simms, Texas on September 21, 1935, George was raised in New Boston, Texas before enlisting in the United States Air Force.

George met and married the love of his life, Clarice, in Naples, Texas before eventually settling in Sugar Land, Texas where they celebrated 60 years of marriage. In their early years, George and Clarice could be found most weekends square dancing. In recent years, George could be found most mornings sharing coffee and stories with his ‘breakfast buddies’.

George is survived by his sons Danny Ray Gortney and wife Jennifer, George Timothy Gortney, and wife Vivian; grandchildren, Brook (Erik) Taunton, Brian (Helena) Scherr, Michael (Brittney) Ludwig, Jessica (Ethan) Roberts, and Heather (Corey) Woodul; thirteen great grandchildren; and siblings J W Gortney and Johnnie Helen Allen; and numerous other family and friends. George was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice, parents George W and Mae Gortney, brother Charles Gortney and sister, Ruby Lee Schneider.

Visitation and reception will be Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church, New Boston, Texas. Services will be at 12:00 PM, with Dr. Ken Cox officiating. Burial immediately following at Ringwood Cemetery Old Boston, Texas.
