Second victim in July 6 NB shooting dies in hospital

By Susan Lindsey

Staff Reporter

The second teen victim in the Fourth of July weekend shooting in New Boston has died, authorities said.

Nicholas Webster, 19, of Jefferson, Texas, succumbed to injuries he received in the July 6 shooting outside of Dogwood Plaza apartments in the 300 block of Lindsey Street. He died Thursday in a Texarkana hospital, said New Boston Police Chief Gary McCrary.

His body has been sent to Dallas for autopsy.

Following the shooting, Webster was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries and was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Webster was the second fatality in the shooting incident. Princeton Washington, Jr., 19, of Linden, Texas, died at the scene.

The alleged shooter was identified as Malaki Beckham, 19, of New Boston.

Beckham allegedly fled the scene in Washington’s vehicle. Police located in the 100 block of Peggy Street in New Boston about 30 minutes after the shooting.

Beckham was located in Clarksville, Texas, July 11. He was taken into custody without incident and transferred to Bowie County Jail five days later, said McCrary.

Beckham is facing two capital murder charges and probation violation. His bail has been set at $2 million.

Beckham was on probation following his release from a Texas Department of Corrections jail in June 2023. He had been sentenced to two years for the February 2022 armed robbery of a New Boston convenience store and credit card abuse.

Police have not released the relationship between the victims and Beckham or a motive for the shooting.

The shooting is still under investigation.

Anyone with information on the shooting is encouraged to call NBPD at 903-628-3771.
