Pleasant Grove ISD’s Response to Allegations of Unsportsmanlike Conduct at Recent Volleyball Game

Pleasant Grove ISD is aware of the allegations concerning unsportsmanlike conduct by students during the recent volleyball game between Pleasant Grove High School and North Lamar High School held on October 29 at PGHS. We take these claims seriously and are committed to fostering a respectful and positive environment for all who are in attendance at PGISD events.

We have conducted a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident. This joint investigation with North Lamar ISD included interviews of students and staff from both schools and game officials.  We also reviewed video footage from multiple sources including security cameras, game film, broadcasts and cell phone recordings.

Our investigation confirms that during a very intense match between the two schools, the result of which determined the District championship, a few spectators on the PGISD sidelines engaged in unsportsmanlike comments and gestures toward the NLHS team.  This behavior is below the standard PGISD sets for its students and fans.  The district has policies in place regarding student conduct, and we are addressing the violations appropriately.

There is a more serious allegation involving spitting on the NLHS players that has been spread through social media.  Our investigation determined this statement is entirely false.  The NLHS volleyball coach confirmed he had questioned every player and not one player indicated they were spit on.  In addition, PGISD interviewed witnesses in the area and no one brought forth any indication of spitting.  Video evidence does not show spit exiting the mouth of the individual accused of spitting nor a reaction from the players who may have been spit on.  Witnesses reported the individual in the video accused of spitting (who is not a Pleasant Grove student) was actually barking.

Three days after the game, PGISD learned that one NLHS student claimed to have heard a racist taunt. This allegation was not raised by any player, coach, referee, or fan during the event, and PGISD has not found any evidence to suggest that this allegation is true. PGISD condemns any conduct that would create a discriminatory environment. Although PGISD is not aware of such discriminatory behavior, PGISD encourages any individual who believes they have witnessed something like that to immediately report it so that it can be addressed.

Our priority is to ensure that all participants uphold the values of good sportsmanship, respect, and integrity, which are fundamental to our educational and athletic programs. In the future, PGISD will provide an environment that is conducive to a positive game atmosphere for all who are in attendance.  We will create more physical space between the student section and the team benches.  We will position staff in closer proximity to the student section.  We are also reinforcing our commitment to teaching and promoting good sportsmanship and fan etiquette among our students.

We appreciate the assistance from North Lamar ISD administration and coaches with this investigation.  We also appreciate the community’s support as we work through this matter and will provide further updates as appropriate.
