A child was killed and a Maud teenager was injured in a crash near Red Lick Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were called to the crash scene on Myrtle Springs Road about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Officials said Jessie Strickland, 19, of Maud, was driving east with a 10-year-old male passenger when her 2007 Monte Carlo failed to negotiate a curve. Strickland left the road and crashed into a tree, said Sgt. Ethan Sartor, TxDPS public information officer.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene. Strickland was taken to a Texarkana hospital in critical condition.
Strickland and the child were not wearing seatbelts, Sartor said.
The crash is still under investigation.
