Breaking through: Bears end nineyear drought against Brahmas

Breaking through: Bears end nineyear drought against Brahmas

New Boston - bye weA record without a win at this point isn’t one that anyone would expect to see at Paul Pewitt. For DeKalb coach Buddy Griffin and his Bears, that didn’t matter. The Bears knew they still had to take care of business to keep pace in the race for a district title.

As anticipated, the Brahmas came out motivated and prepared to battle until the end but the final breaks went DeKalb’s way and allowed the Bears to leave with a 39-27 win that keeps them a game behind Hooks for the district lead with the Hornets yet to observe their bye week and their head to head meeting coming up Oct. 28 in DeKalb. The win is the first win for DeKalb over the Brahmas in nine years, breaking a streak that had haunted the Bears for nearly a decade. The Bears struck first, holding Pewitt to a three and out on the game’s opening drive. Winky Williams rushed for two first downs on the drive and finished the opening drive with a 32-yard touchdown run. Conrad Crouch added the extra point to give DeKalb a 7-0 lead. The Brahmas responded on the next drive thanks to their running game as six different players received carries. Pewitt’s Isaac Hodges finished the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run, but the Bears stopped the two-point conversion to maintain the lead. The Bears’ next drive lasted into the second quarter, but only by a few seconds when, on the opening play of the frame, Kaleb Dooley tossed a bomb to a streaking Ross Tapley, who flew into the end zone for an 81-yard touchdown. Crouch’s extra point made it 14-6.

DeKalb looked to sink their claws into the game early on the next drive, but Brahma quarterback Hayden Green found Michkye Perry for a 29yard gain on third and nine to keep a Pewitt drive alive. Nine plays later, Pewitt tied things up when James Byrd rushed in for a nine-yard score and added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.
