The New Boston Masonic Lodge No. 69 presented New Boston High School graduate Sean Pike with the Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar scholarship on June 22. Mirabeau Lamar was the second president of the Texas nation. As president, he worked to support public schools and established two universities. His vision earned him the tidal “Father of Education” in Texas and his motto, “the cultivated mind is the guardian of genius”, was adopted as the motto for the University of Texas. His voice still echoes “public education” today. Lamar strongly believed in human liberty, states rights and public education under local school board control. This award makes it possible to honor any deserving graduate for outstanding achievement
