The DeKalb Juneteenth Parade and festivities were held Saturday with a long line of cars, floats and riders on horseback winding their way through downtown DeKalb. Fulton Street United Holiness Church was this year’s honorary Grand Marshall of the parade. The day was capped off with food and fun for all at City Park, including brisket, ribs, turkey legs and goat, along with homemade ice cream, chips and drinks and a softball tournament. The DeKalb Juneteenth Celebration Committee’s Jerome Wilson stated, “Juneteenth is a very important day in African American history. Juneteeth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. We can use Juneteenth as a way to acknowledge our past faults, help heal current divisions, and move forward with a future and a nation more united.”
