Red beans and cornbread for Thanksgiving

Well, it is Thanksgiving again and once more most of us will gather around a table or a TV and enjoy lots of food and time with family. We will talk about the things we are thankful for, and a whole lot of us will speak fondly, shed a tear, and reminisce about those who are not there with us anymore. I expect this year to be a challenge for my family, as it was just two months ago that we said goodbye to my wife.

I know several others around the area who will have a place empty at the table like Ronny Looney and his family having their Thanksgiving without Wana, my friend Kelli Fannin and her family will be missing Don, and my friend Robin Obenoskey and all of hers experiencing their holiday without their patriarch Doden King. Many others will do the same. No doubt there will be tears flowing as families sit together remembering those who have gone on, and it will be hard to experience the holiday without them, especially this first one, but there will be smiles too. Afterall, it’s Thanksgiving, and all of us can find much to be thankful for if we take the time to look. That’s the thing I am slowly starting to see again. The fact that even though there is so much sadness and pain with loss, there are still the joys of life.
