After some time a new girl showed up in the family dynamics. It was my friend’s niece. She was pretty and young and had just come home from college after breaking up with her fiance. She really didn’t have two minutes for me, except to meet me and try and have some understanding as to why I was there.
After a while some of the family, including my friend, said things like why don’t you and Melanie go out on a date? I would respond with “that young girl doesn’t need the likes of me, ruining her life.” “Besides I can’t afford it.” Again all the money I had coming in was the 20 per week from the V.A. hospital for gas. They said we will pay for it.
Unbeknownst to me they were setting the stage for her as well. Why don’t you and David go on a date? To which I am sure she told them something along the lines of “No way or not likely.” I’m sure it was colorful whatever the response, and since she is a preacher’s wife now I will protect her integrity by not eluding further. After a while and after much nudging on both sides she did agree to go out with me.
