One of the things you learn in life, especially when you get older and recognize the fact, is that we don’t always get to call the shots. Things happen in our lives despite our best efforts and often things happen that are not on our list of things to do. Our smart phone calendars can be obsolete when life comes calling unexpectedly, and when those things happen, it is how we choose to react that can set the tone for our days ahead.
A very good friend of mine took the time to point out to me this week that a line used in the last missive in this spot was grossly incorrect. It was not Loretta Lynn that voiced those famous words “I never promised you a rose garden.” It was in fact Lynn Anderson who sang those lyrics, but nevertheless, the words still ring true. We were not promised a life without valleys and the highway to Heaven may have a few bumps and potholes in it along the way.
It is simply a fact of life that sometimes bad things happen to the best of people. Friends and family die too young, illness comes, car wrecks happen, and the local drive-thru often forgets to give you mayo instead of mustard. See, I threw that last one in to illustrate something that I have seen become far too common in our world. Over and over again on social media I see posts about things that the poster deems “horrible and tragic” when in fact it is a matter of a minor nuisance.
