A little more conversation about Elvis

A little more conversation about Elvis

Area Elvis fans will have a special opportunity on Saturday, January 11, 2020, when native New Boston author Gene Wilson will hold a signing of his latest book, Elvis Presley, The People’s Star, at the New Boston Library from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Gene Wilson is a 1956 graduate of New Boston High School, and a member of the Lion’s Sports Hall of Fame.  After graduating East Texas State University in Commerce with degrees in both journalism and English, and a three year stint in the US Army, Mr. Wilson was hired as the Dallas Morning News’ youngest ever sports writer, a title he held for many years.  During his six years at Dallas Morning News he was also named Sportswriter of the Year.   From there,  Wilson took a position with Fairchild Publications, a world-wide publisher of fashion magazines, where he served as the Dallas office Bureau Chief , before founding The Wilson Company in 1980.   The Wilson Company is a  public relations, sports marketing and sports representation firm that has represented the likes of Tiger Woods, and NASCAR racer Steve Perry.

Mr. Wilson has also authored numerous books, including one about New Boston track star Sid Garton.  He says his latest project is just as near to his heart.   “I have always been an Elvis fan,” said Wilson.  “I saw him first at the New Boston High School gymnasium and there were about a hundred people there.  Just a few months later he put on a concert at the New Boston football field and there were about four hundred people there.  That’s how fast he gained popularity.”
