Healed, whole, and with his Savior, Wayne Poteet, 78 years old of Hooks, Texas, is free of the burdens of this life after a hard-fought, lengthy, but always courageous battle with cancer.
Wayne Poteet was born November 25, 1943, in Crosby, Texas, to Howard and Noma Poteet. As a young boy in a hard-working family in Huffman, Texas, Wayne learned farming skills early. In 1958, the family moved to the Hooks area and Wayne farmed with his father and older brother. While in high school, Wayne raised a herd of cattle and started his personal farming business. He attended Texarkana College and continued to expand his agriculture endeavors. In 1966, he purchased his dream car, a 1967 Corvette, and met his future wife, Gwen Vahle. They were married in 1967; a few years later, two daughters, Penny and Inger, completed their family. Wayne finally “retired” from farming when health challenges limited his physical abilities.
Wayne was a member and supporter of various farming groups and organizations. He was a huge supporter of local charity causes and a loyal “booster” of Hooks High School, especially the band and athletics. Wayne also served as a member of the deacon body and on several committees at FBC-Hooks. His generous and kind heart was always focused on the church’s outreach programs, particularly youth activities and Operation Christmas Child. Among those who will greet Wayne in Heaven are: his parents Howard and Noma Poteet; parents-inlaw Bill and Novis Vahle; sister and brother-in-law Doris and Nick Sunseri; sister-in-law Mary Ann Vahle; brother-in-law Dwight Vahle, and other extended family members and dear friends.
