After what some fans consider to be the “greatest year ever for Hooks Athletics”, the Hornets are far from satisfied. This year, the program has goals set high in every sport.
Athletic Director Chris Birdwell said, “Last year overall, may quite possibly be the most successful year in Hooks athletics ever overall. You know, baseball had a better year here, our volleyball had a better year there, but as a whole program, I’ve looked and looked and I’ve tried to find it, but I have not found anything that matches last year as far as the success in the program.”
“We won district in football with varsity, junior varsity, and eight grade. Then in basketball the boys won the same thing, varsity won district, junior varsity won district, and eighth grade won district”, said Birdwell. “Our varsity baseball team was district champions along with junior varsity. Then our varsity softball team won district as well. Our girls basketball team played for a district championship and in the last game they ended up second. It was the most district championships I could find in one year. One of my goals since I became an athletic director nine years ago was to get every team in the playoffs in every major sport and this was the first year we were able to accomplish that goal.”
