The Juneteenth Organization of New Boston will host its annual Juneteenth event at T&P Trailhead Park on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15. Juneteenth, formally known as “Freedom Day”, is the oldest known celebration commemorating the emancipation of slavery in Texas in 1865. On this day, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to order freedom for the enslaved people of the state — two months after the Confederacy surrendered in the Civil War.
“I appreciate the diversity that comes along with Juneteenth knowing that it’s a holiday that not only African-Americans can enjoy, but all nationalities,” said Patricia Thompson, President of the Juneteenth Organization of New Boston.
“Our theme is unity through diversity and our goal is to bring our community together and to celebrate one another regardless of nationality, race, ethnicity, or social status.”
