When Catie Swenson delivered her third son SJ ten weeks early in 2017, little did she know that the time he spent in multiple neonatal intensive care units would lead her family to help other families dealing with similar situations.
At 32 weeks pregnant with SJ, Swenson developed HELLP syndrome, a severe form of preeclampsia which affects several organ systems in the mother’s body. The syndrome can be fatal to both the mother and child.
Swenson was flown from Wadley Regional Medical Center to University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock for the birth. After two weeks at UAMS, SJ was transferred to CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System where he spent about six weeks and then another two weeks in Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
