Turkey and football are the side dishes

Well, it is officially November and as soon as the clock clicked midnight on October 31 people started talking about the holidays. I have friends who have already put up their Christmas trees and decorations and the Thanksgiving family get togethers are already being planned.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with folks getting in the holiday mood, I am just hoping that we might actually remember why we celebrate the holidays of Christmas and Thanksgiving. It should be fairly obvious, but that doesn’t keep so many from forgetting. Thanksgiving is a day where most of us look forward to giant meals of turkey and dressing, seeing family that we haven’t seen for a while, and of course, an afternoon filled with football on the big screen. My family will do all of that most likely in one way or another, though with grown kids the festivities are often divided by obligations and busy schedules. Like you, I look forward to having my kids all in one place, extra time to play with the grand kids, and this year will bring a little pat on the ever-growing belly of my oldest daughter, who is soon to bring my third grandchild into our lives.

I also look forward to special food on the table, especially the famous lemon/chocolate pie that my wife once made a tradition and now my daughters carry on. That may seem odd to you, but if your wife decides she wants lemon and chocolate all in one bite, that is what you have on the table. It’s pretty good really, and now brings the memory of the one who first brought it to our Thanksgiving table.
