We like nuts. No, we LOVE nuts. However, nuts can be expensive, so we wanted to see which nut varieties we could grow on our Northeast Texas farm.
Pecans were first, in 2013. We planted 21 pecan trees, seven each of three varieties. They are just now bearing a crop, so we look forward to eating them soon. We had a few last year, and they tasted amazing.
Almonds were next, in 2014. We planted 12 almond trees, four each of three varieties. After five years we harvested our first nut and doubled our crop in 2020 – to two almonds. It was clear we would be raising almond trees for the honeybees; almond blossoms produce highly nutritious pollen.
