Barnes takes plea deal, gets 40 years

A New Boston woman has accepted a plea agreement from the State of Texas today on a host of Injury to a Child charges relating to charges filed against her husband Cody Barnes.

202nd District Court Judge John Tidwell accepted the plea deal offered by the State and offered harsh words to Brittany Barnes while showing a great measure of compassion for the children that were the victims of what can only be described as a horrendous nightmare of abuse and neglect for years inside the Barnes home in New Boston.

Judge Tidwell stated, “Mrs. Barnes, I’m going to tell you, I rarely ever speak during these things. The judge in me, after sitting through that trial last week and watching the absolute trauma those children went through, and listening to not only the therapists, but physically watching those children shake as they testified not more than a few feet away from me, makes it very difficult to take anything but life. At the same time, as a parent, I can’t bring myself to put those children through another trial and go through that trauma, and it is only because of those children and what I witnessed with my own eyes is why I will accept this plea.”
