For the second year in a row, the DeKalb Education Foundation is hosting a golf tournament ‘fore’ education.
The second annual Grow Your Own Teachers Golf Tournament is scheduled Friday, May 16 at Oak Grove Golf Club.
“This is important because, as everyone knows in a small school district, money is tight and teachers want to be able to give their students new educational opportunities. But they just don’t have the money to be able to afford some of those things … The education foundation is an opportunity for the community to really come together to support our teachers and our students,” said Warren McDaniel, vice president of development for the DeKalb Education Foundation.
“It allows our teachers to do those things that normally couldn’t do that the school wouldn’t be able to afford.”
Registration is $400 for a 4-person scramble team or $500 for corporate sponsorship which includes a banner and team registration.
Their goal is to have 18 teams registered.
“All the money raised goes toward our grant program,” McDaniel said. “It’s just another way for us to try and put money back to our students and our teachers.”
“We’re just trying to get as many people into this as we can because the more money we raise means more grants we can give out. Everything that comes into us goes out the schools,” McDaniel added.
Registration begins at noon with the tournament to begin at 1 p.m. An awards dinner will follow at 5 p.m.
Last year, the golf tournament raised $9,000. This year, McDaniel said they are hoping to increase that to $12,000.
The DeKalb Education Foundation is in its second year of providing grant opportunities for teachers at DeKalb Independent School District.
To date, they have awarded $34,300 in Innovative Teaching and New Teacher grants.
The golf tournament is one of two big fundraisers the DeKalb Education Foundation puts on each year.
