5th annual memorial scholarship tournament to honor life and legacy of Megan Daniel

It is almost time again for the Megan Daniel Annual Memorial Tournament with plans for this year to be the biggest and best ever. This year’s tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, at DeKalb City Park.

The tournament honors the life of Megan Daniel, who was taken from her family in November of 2020, along with friends Katie Jo Vaughn and Ashlin Cox in a tragic accident near Chili Flats.

The family has since taken to keeping the memory of Meg alive with this annual tournament in her honor. In its first year it raised $10,000, in year two that total went up to $15,000, in year three last year it went up again to over $17,000. All of the money raised goes directly to college scholarships for graduating se-niors from New Boston and DeKalb.

Just recently, $8,000 in scholarships were handed out to 2025 graduating seniors, four in New Boston and four in DeKalb. The total amount of scholarships now given as a result of the tournament is now $32,000/ Donations are now being accepted for this year’s tournament and organizers do have a 501c3 status so all donations are tax deductible.

This year’s tournament will include the softball tournament, plus a raffle. There will also be Christina’s Tacos on site with their food truck and the Pour Horse Company will be on hand with snow cones.

Raffle prizes already include a propane grill, a custom- made fire pit, a smoker, photo sessions with local photographers, a week of free day care, and even a weekend stay at the Historic Captain’s Castle in Jefferson, Texas.

If you want to make a donation to the raffle you can do so by contacting Sarah Jackson at 903-908-5118. If you would like to make a monetary donation you can do that at Red River Credit Union in the Megan Daniel Memorial Fund.

Special commemorative T-shirts are also available for the tournament, and you can place your order for those with Sarah as well.

The annual tournament, and all of the hard work and effort behind it, is the family’s way of giving back to their community while forever remembering and celebrating the life of Megan Daniel.

If you need more information on the 5th Annual Megan Daniel Memorial Softball Tournament, see their Facebook page, or call Sarah Jackson at 903-908-5118.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Tribune office or from Sarah Jackson, Mike Jackson, Kim Kinney, Shane Daniel, Brandi Strickland or Kim Barnes. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

All money raised from the tournament goes directly back into scholarships for local graduates.
