It’s hard to tune in to the news these days without hearing about what some seem to think is the greatest threat to the American Way of Life. This enemy is not the hunger of our children, the mistreatment of our veterans, or any of the number of global crises that haunt the headlines. No, it seems the biggest threat to America these days is D.E.I.. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are words that used to mean that we wanted the least among us to have an equal shot. They have now become synonyms for “wokeness” or “political correctness.” Victims of the war being waged on D.E.I. include civil rights activists, military veterans, and Sesame Street.
The United States Navy was recently ordered to rename ships that have been named after civil rights activists since 2021. The history pages of African American soldiers, Navajo code talkers, and military women were quietly erased from military websites, only to be restored after immense public outcry. Public broadcasting, like your local NPR station or your kid’s favorite morning cartoon, have been threatened with slashed funding for their “political ideology.” Apparently, even Elmo is too divisive these days.
They say history is written by the victors, and it seems that history can be erased by them as well.
