A very special basketball tournament was held last Saturday at New Boston Middle School to honor the memory of former NBHS Lion standout athlete Derrell Walker.
Walker was a member of the Lions basketball squad that went to the Regional Finals in 1983. In 1984, the Lions went undefeated and won the state championship.
Walker passed in 2014 and his siblings, Kenneth Betts, Jr. and Sandi Walker Woods started this annual tournament in his honor. It is held the last week of June each year in recognition of Derrell’s birthday on June 30. The tournament celebrated its 5th year this past week.
