Thirty Years Ago - 1995

July 13, 1995

On Tuesday, July 11, the new Telford Unit, one of 60 new prisons opening across the state this year, had formal grand opening ceremonies that brought officials from TDCJ and members of the New Boston Special Industrial Development Corporation together. Rep. Barry Telford, with the help of Allan Polunsky, Chairperson for the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, did the honors of the ribbon cutting before a throng of visitors descended on the prison for tours.

Twenty Years Ago - 2005

DeKalb Police Chief DeWayne Cannon received 500 cable gun locks from the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) last week. Randy Lamb with the NSSF was making a swing through Northeast Texas last week distributing gun locks and educational materials to local law enforcement agencies to distribute to their towns. The NSSF created Project Childsafe to promote firearm safety in the home.

Lasting Bubbles, owned by Judy Peek of Avery, won its third straight Valor Farms Stakes race at Lone Star Pack last Saturday. Lasting Bubbles was also featured on the cover of the park’s racing season program. The horse is trained by Kevin Peek and its jockey for the race was Luis Quinonez.
