To Stan Kimbell, being the athletic director for New Boston Independent School District is a “dream job” that has finally become a reality.
Kimbell, his wife Katy, son Grant and daughter Andee have joined the New Boston Lion family.
“This is a job that’s always been on the radar and I’ve always wanted it. It’s always been a dream job for me and I’ve always dreamed of myself being part of this town and this district,” Kimbell said. “I’ve been very fortunate to be able to play New Boston over the years and there’s a lot of pride in this town.
“There’s a lot of pride in this school, with this program. And one of my biggest goals is to be able to push back to that and give the community that pride back … You’ve got to steadily have grace and have patience with kids and make sure that the kids are going in the same direction as your vision.”
Kimbell began his coaching career in 2009 in Mount Pleasant.
In the years following, he coached in several North and East Texas schools ranging from 3A to 5A programs.
And he credits the head coaches and coaching staffs he has worked with for teaching him at all levels.
“There was a lot that I needed to learn as a young coach, and I’m still learning as a young coach,” Kimbell said.
His past coaching experience has primarily focused on football defensive coordination and assistant coach. This is his first year as director and head football coach.
Kimbell said he has brought on several new coaches to enhance the entire athletic program.
“I’m bringing guys that are better than me, that bring value. I want to bring guys back here that are experts in what they do,” he said. “I’m very excited with our staff this year.”
Under Kimbell, Daniel Thompson has returned to NBISD as the defensive coordinator and Tra Carson was brought on as the offensive coordinator.
He has also hired T.J. Cox as the head baseball coach, Keane Guiden as head boys basketball coach, Robert Bennett to serve as the middle school baseball coach and Driennah Laney as softball coach.
“I’m very excited for what our boys and girls staff can achieve this year. We’ve got a lot of winners and we’ve got a lot of great coaches,” Kimbell said.
“I’ve tried to put together a great staff and I’ve got a great staff … They can pour into the kids, that love kids and are here for them. That’s what I believe I’ve done. We’re bonding more each and every day and we’re getting to know each other each and every day,” he added.
Kimbell is a 2009 graduate of Springhill High School in Springhill, Arkansas.
He played basketball, baseball, football and golf in his high school career, but said his teaching career came from time spent in school with his mother.
“She was the high school secretary for my whole life … so I grew up in school,” Kimbell said. “It was one of those places where I felt safe and I loved learning. I loved school and, even though it was tough in some areas, I loved learning … I love sports and I love teaching and I love developing kids.”
And it is a passion he shares with his family.
His sister, brother-in-law and sister-in-law are all educators.
