With teachers having in-service training at local schools this week, New Boston Middle School stands out a little for having one of the more fun events as part of the process. Glenn Barfield, who took over as the new principal last month, sprung a surprise on teachers Wednesday morning - a smoothie making contest. Using the theme of “A Smooth Start to the School Year,” teachers took a break from training at midday to find tables laden with blenders, ice, and fruit. Barfield said he thought the contest would be a way to relieve the tension and monotony of staff development. The winning team was Matt Chastain, Charles Patton, Donna O’Rear, Melissa Raney, Sheryl King, Peggy James, and Jennifer Cokely.
