The case of the missing keys

Some mornings I grab my Bible, sip my coffee, and think, This is going to be a productive day of ministry. Other mornings, I accidentally star in my episode of CSI: Key Detectives.

It happened not long ago when I was trying to head out the door for street ministry. My car was packed with snacks, bottled water, and scripture cards—but no keys. Not a jingle. Not a trace.

“No problem,” I thought. I’d use the handy little app on my phone. One tap and my keys would beep like a beacon of modern technology.

Beep, beep, beep! I followed the sound into my bedroom. Nothing. Tried again. Beep, beep, beep! This time in my writing office. Still nothing. I searched the sofa cushions, the kitchen counter, the laundry room… nada.

At this point, I called for backup—my husband. Surely, two brains could solve one simple key mystery. He heard the beeping, too. Now we had witnesses.

The problem? That beep followed me like a shadow. Every room, every corner—the same sound. I began to wonder if my keys had achieved teleportation.

Finally, in frustration, I stood in the hallway with my hands on my hips. And that’s when I felt it. A little bump against my waist. I reached into the pocket of my jeans and—yes, friends—there they were.

I had been carrying my keys the entire time. Every beep came politely from my pocket, trying to tell me, “We’re literally right here, lady!”

So yes, my keys and I toured the entire house together. Now, before you laugh too hard, let me tell you what God showed me after the embarrassment wore off: this is exactly how I can be with Him.

How often do we pray, “Lord, where are You? Speak to me! Show me the way!” Then we go running from one “room” of life to another—checking relationships, bank accounts, schedules, even Google searches—hoping to find the answer. All the while, His presence is already right here.

God isn’t hiding, playing cosmic peek-a-boo. Scripture says in Isaiah 30:21 (ESV), “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

That beeping sound that followed me around the house?

It’s like the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit—steady, persistent, always there if I’ll stop long enough to notice. But instead of pausing, I often keep searching, convinced the answer must be somewhere “out there.”

Sometimes we miss God’s voice because we’re expecting a trumpet blast when He’s whispering in our spirit. Other times, like me with my keys, we mistake His nearness for something else—thinking His signal must be coming from another direction.

What I should have done was check the simplest place first. And maybe that’s true in our faith, too. Before we chase the next big thing, perhaps we need to stop and ask, Lord, is what I’m looking for already here?

I’ll admit, I’ve been a blonde long enough to know my learning curve can be… scenic. But once I learn something, I don’t forget it. Well, mostly. Next time my keys go missing, I’ll check my pocket first. And next time I’m wondering where God is in my situation, I’ll remember— He’s been with me the whole time.

Here’s the truth: God’s presence isn’t something we have to hunt down—it’s something we have to tune into. And unlike my key tracker, His signal never fails.

So if you’re feeling lost today, stop running from room to room. Take a breath. Check your “pocket.” You might find He’s been right there all along, gently beeping, “I’m here. You’re not alone. Now, let’s walk together.”
