Gridiron action kicked off in earnest last Friday with DeKalb and Hooks earning first game wins and Maud, Redwater and James Bowie falling short.
The Bears came out ready to show that they are ready to challenge for a repeat district championship as they took the sting out of the Yellowjackets from Mineola with a convincing 42-13 win.
The Bear faithful got their first varsity look at freshman quarterback Maddux Burgin and Burgin gave them something to see. Burgin earned the Tribune Player of the Week honors for his performance where he went 20 of 24 passing for 210 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also rushed for two scores. Burgin’s favorite target for the night was senior wideout Walker Matteson. Matteson caught 10 passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
