Thirty Years Ago - 1995

September 3, 1995

The Texas Legislature struck down smoking on school property and during school-sponsored events with Senate Bill 1. The Tobacco Free Schools Provision also prohibits smoking in any building used for school purposes. The policy applies to students, employees, and guests.

Twenty Years Ago - 2005

September 7, 2005

Hundreds of people evacuated from New Orleans at the end of last week are now staying in temporary accomodations at two New Boston churches. Gary Owen, the Bowie County Emergency Management Coordinator, said Emergency Management Operations in Texarkana asked New Boston to mobilize last Thursday. The shelters at the TAPP United Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church of New Boston have showers and kitchens where the Hurricane Katrina evacuees can get a hot meal and a shower.

Ten Years Ago - 2015

The DeKalb Lady Bears and Avery Lady Bulldogs put on a volleyball show for a crowded house Friday night as the two squads battled down to the wire to claim the victory. It was the girls from Avery who edged the hometown Lady Bears in a very tight contest with a final score of 25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-9.

Five Years Ago- 2020

The DeKalb Bears kept their streak alive with their fourth straight win over New Boston, keeping the Traveling Trophy for another year and giving the Class of 2021 the distinction of not losing a game to the Lions. This year’s win was fueled by a great defensive effort, and big plays on offense. Jamar Vaughn rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown. Winkie Williams had 102 yards rushing, and senior QB AJ Burgin hit Kaleb Dooley on a pass in the endzone for a touchdown.
