Bowie County Sheriff’s deputies and the Hooks Police Department were startled Monday morning to find a four-month old tiger cub wandering the right-of-way along I-30. Deputy George Huggins, who was one of the officers who caught the tiger, said the sheriff’s department was dubious when it began to get calls from people saying a tiger was walking along the highway. But that’s exactly what they found - a male tiger cub with a collar on near the Leary exit. The Tiger Creek WIldlife Refuge in Tyler, Texas picked up the cub Monday evening.

On A Mission - A packed house at the DeKalb First Baptist Church Family Life Center Saturday night came together to raise funds for the Nick’s Mission Backpack Program. The program, started by Barbara and Tony Shumake to honor the memory of their son Nick, provides backpacks full of food for the weekend to local school children.

(Archivist’s Note: Nick’s Mission is still serving the needs of kids in our area! Just $5 can feed a child for an entire weekend. Donations can be mailed to 11026 FM 1840, DeKalb, TX 75559, or sent through Venmo to @NicksMission- BackpackProgram)
