Thursday accident on Hwy. 98 claims life

The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a fiery crash that occurred Thursday morning that left one person dead and one in the hospital.

Troopers responded to the call after 6 a.m. Thursday in response to a head-on collision on Texas Highway 98 near Simms.

Preliminary investigation shows that a white 2009 Toyota Tundra driven by Caleb Applegate, 21 of Simms, was traveling northbound when he crossed into oncoming traffic. Applegate struck a red 1991 Ford Ranger driven by 36-year-old Lee Sellers, of Willis, Texas, head on, said Sgt. Ethan Sartor, TxDPS spokesman.

The crash caused the vehicles to burst into flames.

Simms Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the call to extinguish the flames.

Sellers was pronounced dead at the scene. Applegate was transported by LifeNet to a nearby hospital.

TxDPS is still investigating the accident.
