Michael proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1969 to 1975 and fought in the Vietnam War. In 1971, he married the love of his life, Sandra Hanna, and together they celebrated 54 years of marriage. He later retired as a mechanical electrician with the Red River Army Depot.
A man of faith and dedication, Michael was a member of the Dalby Springs Masonic Lodge and attended Sand Hill Baptist Church. Known for his love of tinkering, he often said, “Got to get my place cleaned up.”
He always had a loyal dog by his side, and his beloved Queenie was his constant companion. His favorite song, “I’ll Fly Away,” reflected the peace he carried in his heart. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Royce Garrett; one sister, Barbara Allen; and infant twin sisters.
Michael is survived by his wife, Sandra Garrett of Simms, Texas; two daughters, Lanell Hooper and her husband, Jeffrey, of DeKalb, Texas, and Adria Daniels and her husband, Floyd, of DeKalb, Texas; and one brother, Danny Garrett and his wife, Lajuan, of New Boston, Texas. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Cody and his wife, Tara, Ethan, Cole, Hanna and her husband, Seth, Victorya, and Kyleigh and her fiancé, Hagen; four great-grandchildren, Amelia, Carter, Sterling, and Miles; four godchildren, Christian, Taylor, Hope-Lynn, and Makaylee; and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Bates Family Funeral Home in DeKalb, Texas, with James Brinkley officiating.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, at Bates Family Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sand Hill Cemetery in Simms, Texas.
