Telford inmate gets life for murder of cellmate

A Bowie County jury did not believe a Barry B. Telford Unit inmate feared for his life when he strangled his cellmate with an electrical cord in June 2023.

Ivan Villalobos, 38, was found guilty and sentenced to serve life in a Texas prison by a jury of nine men and four women for the June 10, 2023 murder of Trevor Lewis inside their cell in the J-pod at the Telford Unit. He will be eligible for parole in 2055 at the age of 68. Additionally, 102nd District Court Judge Jeff Addison ordered Villalobos to pay $290 in court costs.

Addison presided over the case. The State was represented by Greg Whitley, a special prosecutor for the Office of the Inspector General. Texarkana attorney Butch Dunbar was appointed to represent Villalobos.
