It is easy for us these days to get caught up in the drama and have an almost unquenchable hunger to find out the “dirt” on those around us.
Car wrecks and housefires draw a whole lot more attention than church socials and bake sales, because there is that need for us to rubberneck and see the action.
That’s why social media sites garner so much attention these days. Sites where customers bash on businesses, lots of crime stories are posted, and the “dirt” is thrown around a lot will have folks flock to them in what can be called a sort of digital rubbernecking.
It is human nature to want to see it. We all do it too. Don’t lie, lol. If you are on a social media site, it is almost a given that at time to time you will wander to one of those pages to see what all of the fuss is about.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking those sites. The internet is “free range” and out on that vast pasture you can see every kind of “animal” known to man and there is always that little thing called Freedom of Speech. People have a right to have an opinion, and a right to share it with anyone they can get to listen.
Plus, most of the sites here locally that fall into that genre also do a quite of bit of good too. Weather updates, traffic reports, and the “cheers” that go out on them are useful to the general populace, and how could there be anything wrong with the sharing of good news.
Years ago, my kids were taken back when I joined the social media site Reddit. According to them, Reddit is for them and not us older folks. They say we already took over Myspace, Facebook and Instagram and that we should leave the new ones like Reddit alone.
Reddit is long in my rear view mirror. I had no use for it, and it is nearing the day when I have little use for Facebook. I already don’t use Twitter and Instagram and Snapchat stays around for the sole purpose of getting a daily dose of pictures of my grandchildren.
Let’s face it folks. We live in an age of instant gratification. News comes to us instantly in the palms of our hands. All of the bad stuff in the world is instant too, like porn, gossip and any other kind of “dirt” you can dream up.
It seems as if the simple solution is to just rid ourselves of the mediums to see such stuff. It seems like the easiest way to do away with garbage, is to take it out. The majority will not, and they will not because of human nature. It is just like the cartoons of old where there would be a little angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other. More often than not, we give in to the little devil. Again, human nature.
Proverbs 16 says that there is a way that seems right unto a man, but in the end is death. That is the best summation of the world we live in today. Everybody thinks that their way is right and that they are doing the right thing. More often than not, we are wrong. Especially when we don’t ask our Father God for direction.
I am not going to get too preachy. It is just a basic concept. We are fallible beings. We have a nature built into us that makes us lean a certain way. You can call it humanism, or whatever other label you want to put on it, but in reality, we are bad people.
There is only one that ever lived here on the good ol’ Earth that never listened to the devil on his shoulder. In fact, He had the real deal standing right in front of him trying to make him choose wrong, and He didn’t give in to it.
We do.
