Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death among adults in the United States, claiming approximately 916,000 lives each year, according to the American Heart Association. The term “heart disease” refers to a variety of conditions, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure and congenital heart defects. Many of these conditions can be identified early and managed effectively with proactive care.
Deanna Parker, 64, began her heart journey began with subtle symptoms. She had shortness of breath during a routine errand and later pressure in her chest that prompted her daughter to urge her to seek emergency care. Hospital tests revealed Parker had suffered a “widow maker” heart attack, underscoring the importance of listening to your body even when warning signs seem mild.
