
Vera Mae Thurman, age 88, of New Boston, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026.
Vera was born on January 16, 1938, in Broadwater, Nebraska, to Bert and Fern Shuler Spencer.
Throughout her life, she had a deep devotion to those she loved.
A faithful Christian, Vera was a member of First Baptist Church in Wake Village, Texas, for many years, and later became a member of Moss Springs Baptist Church in Old Boston, Texas. She found joy and fellowship as a member of the Siloam Quilt Club. Vera was also known for her wonderful cooking, often expressing her love through meals shared with family and friends. Above all else, she cherished her family and took great pride in each generation. Vera was truly a social butterfly—happy, upbeat, and endlessly positive. She had a warm smile, an infectious laugh, and a way of making everyone feel welcome and loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Dwaine Thurman; her brother, Bernard Spencer; and several other brothers and family members.
Vera is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Naoma and Jerry McCartney of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Faye and Rick Atchley of New Boston, Texas. She is also survived by her sisters, Alberta Catron of Bridgeport, Nebraska, and Lola Walker of Ogalalla, Nebraska; and one sister-in-law, Frances Spencer.
She leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: Justin Mc-Cartney (Heidi), Kristina Gomez (Mark), Blake Atchley (Shelby), Clay Atchley (Chasity), and Chad Atchley (Taylor); along with ten great-grandchildren. Vera is also survived by numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who will miss her deeply.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 5, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapelwood Cemetery in Texarkana, Texas, with Brother Scott Neathery officiating.
Vera Mae Thurman will be remembered for her gentle spirit, strong faith, loving heart, and the countless lives she touched. Her legacy of love will continue through her family for generations to come.
