Local girls basketball squads head to Area round

Local ladies did very well in the first round of the UIL state basketball playoffs with the teams from Hooks, DeKalb and James Bowie advancing on to the Area round after securing their Bi-District championship wins.

The undefeated district champion James Bowie Lady Pirates saw their first round of action Tuesday night in Mt. Vernon against North Hopkins and came back home to Simms with a 53-30 win and a Bi-District crown.

Tatum Tyndell led the Lady Pirates scoring with 18 points, followed closely by Abigail Dial with 15 points and Callie Allen with 14.

The Lady Pirates will return to the hardwood on Friday night at Como-Pickton to take on Honey grove for the Area championship at 6 p.m.

The Hooks Lady Hornets took on Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill Lady Red Devils Monday night in Marshall and earned their Bi-District championship with a 54-30 victory.

The Lady Hornets will now take on Edgewood in the Area round of the playoffs. Their matchup is slated for tomorrow night, Thursday, February 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Vernon High School.

The DeKalb Lady Bears had a Bi-District matchup with Harmony Monday night at Prairiland and also came home as a Bi-District champion with a 45-31 win.

The Lady Bears will next take on the Quitman Lady Bulldogs in the Area round. That game is scheduled for this Friday night at Pittsburg with the tip off slated for 6 p.m.

The Avery Lady Bulldogs also advanced to the Area round of the playoffs with a dominating 53-11 win over Miller Grove to earn their Bi-District championship.

The Lady Bulldogs will take to the basketball court again against St. Jo for the Area round contest. Their game is scheduled for this Thursday night in Bonham with the tipoff set for 6 p.m.

Last Friday, the Maud Lady Cardinals saw their banner season come to a close after a head to head matchup with Harts Bluff to determine the 4th seed in their district. The game went back and forth with Harts Bluff prevailing and advancing with a 28-25 win in overtime.
