A well-schooled angler probably won’t get much of an education here, but a novice might learn a little something. If nothing else, they might broaden their vocabulary. Here’s a lexicon of fishing terms and phrases frequently used by anglers of all kinds: 1.) Forward-facing Sonar: For those who may be unfamiliar with FFS, it’s a really cool (and expensive) technology offered in different versions by several companies. Garmin, Lowrance and Humminbird are the big three.
The technology functions using a special transducer that captures real-time imagery around the boat and transmits it to the electronics screen for evaluation. It enables trained eyes to spot suspended fish, cover, and submerge other targets from a considerable distance. Screens may be 16 or larger.
Anglers can use it to make precise bait presentations to fish, see how they react as a bait moves through the water column, or determine whether fish are present before making a single cast. Some FFS users are so proficient with the tech they are able to specifically target the bigger fish and leave the smaller ones alone.
