Talking the Talk: An angler’s vocabulary speaks volumes about their knowledge and love for the game

William Oliver of Chandler was up to his old tricks again on the morning of March 19.

It didn’t take long for the Lake Palestine/Lake Tyler fishing guide to steer Tucker Sepaugh of Belton to the fishing treat of his life. It was about 8 a.m. when an 11-year-old angler hooked up with a monster flathead catfish at Lake Tyler.

Oliver is veteran Lake Palestine/ Tyler multi-species fishing guide who pioneered the art of sniffing out whopper catfish using forward facing sonar technology. The 39-year-old angler is so intrigued by the denizens of the deep that he launched a catch frequency study on the two lakes back in 2022. The idea was to determine how often individual fish are caught, and the locations where the catches are made.
