The Texas Health and Human Services Commission reminds Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients and vendors that candy or sweetened drinks can no longer be purchased with Lone Star Cards in Texas beginning today.
“Texas will ensure the health and well-being of Texans by directing taxpayer dollars to food with real nutritional value,” Gov. Greg Abbott said. “By restricting unhealthy food purchases using SNAP benefits, we are laying the foundation for a stronger, healthier Texas.”
The new restrictions prohibit SNAP benefits from being used to buy candy, gum or sweetened drinks, including beverages made with water that contain 5 grams or more of added sugar or any amount of artificial sweetener.
