It is hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end and, with it, another group of seniors will be walking the stage to receive their diplomas. And this week’s “driving thought” has my mind wandering onto those upcoming celebrations across the county.
I remember when I graduated and heard it called a “commencement” I was somewhat confused. How was this a commencement when that word meant “the beginning of” something. Were we not bringing our high school lives to an end?
Needless to say, it did not take long for me to realize that, while we were saying goodbye to high school, graduation really is a commencement. It is the moment you enter the graduate stage as a child of sorts and exit that same stage into the next steps in life. Moving that tassel across their cap, they are ready to embark on a new chapter as an adult, whether those next steps are to go on to further education in college or a university, enter the workforce or head to basic training for military service.
