Former Tribune publisher Kenny Mitchell was recently awarded the Texas Association of Journalism Educators Friend of Journalism award. This award honors those whose instruction, service and/ or assistance, financial sponsorship or personal dedication and advocacy work toward the betterment of scholastic journalism in Texas.
Mitchell was nominated for the statewide award by Tabitha Houchens, Redwater ISD Publications Adviser. Houchens said Mitchell is well-deserving of this award. “When the email went out about nominations, I immediately thought of Kenny and all that he has done for my students and me,” said Houchens. “He has gone above and beyond, not just for my students, but anyone in need in Bowie County.”
“He has never hesitated to help journalism students, whether through financial assistance to attend camps and conferences, scholarships for seniors or allowing the students to receive byline credit for stories and photos submitted to the news paper,” she went on to say. “He continues to be a strong supporter of education, especially journalism education, in schools throughout the area.”
