Once again, New Boston city politics are heating up, as seven candidates have registered to run for three spots in city government. After 44 years of city government service, the last 24 of those as mayor, Johnny Branson will not seek re-election. Vying for his title will be Pastor Ron Humphrey, former American Legion Post #488 Commander Donald Evans, and former New Boston City Councilman Joe Dike.
Ron Humphrey said city growth is high on his list of priorities if elected mayor. “My desire is to see New Boston continue to grow,” he said. “I want this to be a city we can be proud of and is looked at as an example of responsible government.”
In a statement from Donald Evans, he emphasized the need for a change in city government. “I believe it’s time for a change in New Boston,” he said. “There is so much potential in this small town and I don’t feel that the current regime is doing enough for our citizens. I envision this is New Boston’s chance to bring in more commerce and events for our youth, Veterans, and citizens. Let’s refresh New Boston.”
Joe Dike, who was unseated from his Place 1 seat on the city council in last May’s election cycle by challenger Robb Carr, was contacted for a statement, but had not submitted one as of press time.
