The New Boston City Council unanimously approved the hiring of Garry McCrary as the permanent Chief of Police for the city of New Boston at their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.  Spontaneous applause erupted in the standing-room-only crowd attending the meeting when Councilman Joe Dike announced that the council subcommittee tasked with reviewing the five applicants for the position and making a recommendation was unanimous in their support for McCrary.
Immediately following his appointment, Chief McCrary’s first official action was to decide upon the reinstatement of Lt. Johnny Millwood.  Millwood has been on paid leave since March, when since-ousted Chief Tony King terminated his employment without providing cause.  The city council voted soon after to reinstate Millwood and place him on leave with pay pending an investigation, and Millwood has remained at this status until last Tuesday night’s meeting.  “Johnny and I have been in constant contact for quite a while….,” McCrary stated.  “He’s going to be my school resource officer.  He’s going to have all school operations….I think we need more protection(at the school) and I think we’ve got it.  We’ve got a good man to do it.”
New Boston ISD officials were pleased with the appointment as well.  NBISD Superintendent Brian Bobbitt said in a statement to parents following the announcement of Millwood’s new position, “New Boston ISD would like to welcome Lt. Johnny Millwood. The City of New Boston has agreed to provide a Student Resource Officer for our district, with Lt. Millwood serving in this capacity. I wanted to personally notify our parents to prevent you from being alarmed or concerned when you see a police vehicle on one of our campuses. We look forward to this partnership and are thankful for the City of New Boston’s support of our students and faculty. I hope you have a great day, God bless and GO LIONS!!!”
Millwood will still be employed by the New Boston Police Department, but his services will be provided to the district by the PD.
