Estell dominates as Lady Hornets advance

By Kenny Mitchell

Publisher

The Hooks Lady Hornets continued their hot streak into the postseason and left little doubt that they are a team to be reckoned with as they shutout the Cooper Lady Bulldogs in their first round matchup 11-0 and earned a Bi-District championship.

Ace hurler Marena Estell was dominant on the mound and at the plate, aiding her pitching efforts with a 4-4 batting performance. Estell narrowly missed hitting the cycle, with a pair of triples, a single and a double in the contest.

Abby Russ did get that homer for the Lady Hornets with a shot off the bat of Abby Russ in the 4th inning. Estell, Russ and Korey Brooks each had multi-hit performances for Hooks.

On the mound, Estell allowed just one hit and a walk and struck out nine in a near flawless pitching performance.

The Lady Hornets took the lead early on district leader Hughes Springs Tuesday night, but a three-run blast from the Lady Mustangs’ Shelbie Fickling in the 3rd inning proved to be too much and Hooks fell by a final score of 4-1.

It was just the third loss of the season for the Lady Hornets, who finish in 2nd place in the 14-3A standings behind Hughes Springs.  The Lady Hornets will head into the postseason brackets against either Cooper or Winnsboro, who will finish in the 3rd and 4th place spots in District 13-3A softball. The Lady Mustangs will draw the 4th place team from 13-3A and Hooks will face the 3rd place squad.

That matchup will be a one game playoff and is already scheduled for next Thursday night, April 27 at 7 p.m at Northeast Texas Community College in Mt Pleasant.

New Boston senior Madison Thomas was in best mode Tuesday night and determined to get the W in her last home game as a Lady Lion and drove in five runs to help New Boston beat the visiting Paul Pewitt Lady Brahmas 12-2. Thomas’ onslaught with the bat included a three-run triple in the 2nd inning that opened the flood gates for the Lady Lions.

The win locked down 4th place in the district standings for the ladies from New Boston and sent them into the postseason brackets.

Coach Jason Arsenault and his Lady Lions will face the Lady Patriots from Prairiland in the first round, with a location and date still to be determined.

In the game Tuesday night, the Lady Lions celebrated Senior Night by pounding the Paul Pewitt pitching staff for 12 hits. Thomas, Angel Evans and Alexis Morden each had multi-hit performances.
