DeKalb VFD ESD#6 gets boost from ATCOG

The De Kalb Volunteer Fire Department ESD #6 recently received a loan of $250,000 dollars from the Ar-Tex Council of Governments (ATCOG) for a brand new building to house the fire department. This building has been finished for a short period of time, but with this loan it helps finish paying all that they needed. Fire Chief Robbie Barrett had a few things to say about the new building, but one in particular was, “We are truly blessed.”

The De Kalb Volunteer Fire Department is extremely proud of all that they have. Chief Robbie Barrett talked about that saying, “We currently have seven different vehicles and also one side by side that we can and do use. We are equipped to handle fires within the city and out in the county with the variety of vehicles that we have. Our roster is able to hold up to 25 people, but currently we are operating with about 22 volunteers. We are always looking for volunteers though. We are willing to help send them to school and possibly get them on track to having a career in this business. Just people who are looking to help support their community.”
Before this new building was built some equipment for the department was having to be stored in less than ideal situations. Vehicles were having to be stored outside, and uniforms were having to be stored in buckets that did not allow for proper aeration for them to dry. However, with this new building they were able to have enough room to store all the vehicles in proper places, and even able to get lockers for the uniforms for the firemen. President of the ESD 6 board, Jason McDaniel, is extremely pleased with how things worked out. McDaniel stated, “I cannot give enough credit to all of the firemen and chief Robbie Barrett. While we got them the loan, this is all about them. I have to give a huge thanks to all the board members, Lowell Walker, and everyone who has helped us. Also, a huge thank you to State Bank of De Kalb. They have helped us out a lot and they are amazing.”
Chief Barrett had one more thing to say, “This is a new beginning for this department. We are able to house everything properly, and have something to be proud of. With a new building and everything being able to be properly stored, we are able to cut down our response time. This is a beginning though because we plan to eventually have small substations in different areas that we cover to help cut down our response time even more. We are extremely grateful to everyone who has helped us, and also to every single one of the citizens that we cover. Because without everyone, we could not have done this.”
