Rep. Gary VanDeaver to seek re-election to the Texas House; earns endorsement from Gov. Greg Abbott

NEW BOSTON, TEXAS—State Rep. Gary VanDeaver will seek re-election to the Texas House for District 1, which includes Bowie, Lamar, Franklin, and Red River counties. Since taking office in 2015, VanDeaver has served on the Appropriations Committee as a state budget writer and the Public Education Committee, where he worked to pass historic school finance reform into law.

VanDeaver’s re-election announcement was joined with an endorsement from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. “I am proud to endorse Rep. Gary VanDeaver for re-election. Gary is a strong conservative leader who worked to rein in your property taxes and improve education for Texas students,” said Gov. Abbott.

“I am proud to have the support of Gov. Abbott as I announce my campaign for re-election. Representing my northeast Texas home in the Texas House is an honor and a privilege. I’m running for re-election to build on our accomplishments and continue fighting to keep our local communities, public schools, and to strengthen our region’s economy so that future generations can live, raise a family, and prosper here,” said Rep. VanDeaver.

During the 2019 session of the Texas Legislature, VanDeaver played a leading role in reforming the school finance system from the ground up, shoring up the Teacher Retirement System, and making funds available to improve school safety. He helped draft a financially responsible state budget that holds the line on spending while investing more in priorities like schools, border security, and transportation.

“As a retired teacher and superintendent, I know the importance of education to give every Texas daughter and son a solid foundation to succeed in life, and also to develop a strong workforce to propel the Texas economy as one of the greatest forces for economic progress in the world,” said Rep. VanDeaver.

VanDeaver also worked to pass a new property tax cut into law that invest more state money to buy down the public school portion of local property tax bills. This follows on the heels of previous legislation to grow the homestead exemption, which exempts a larger portion of one’s home value from property taxes. VanDeaver also co-authored HJP 38, which became Proposition 4 on the November 2019 ballot, to amend the Texas Constitution to ban a state income tax.

“Together, we have achieved great things, but there is more work to do. I am eager to keep up the fight for our Northeast Texas home,” said Rep. VanDeaver.

Dr. Gary VanDeaver is a retired school superintendent and serving his third term in the Texas House. He resides in New Boston with his wife of 34 years, Pam. They are members of the First Baptist Church, where Gary serves as a Deacon. The VanDeavers are proud parents to two daughters and even prouder grandparents to two granddaughters.
